This week I am graduating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy NY with a degree in computer and systems engineering. I would say that all people are capable of learning and improving their abilities, knowledge, and skill. My experience has been that if a child, youth, or adult is given the space in which to learn, and introduced to material in a patient manner, in the style that works for them (be that through explanation or visual learning, etc) they will take the initiative to learn and grow at the pace and direction which works for them. I have always loved teaching. I do not have a single style, but attempt to pattern my style to the needs of the student. In particular, I try to present examples using topics, such as sports, dance, or movies, which would be of interest to the particular student.
As a graduate teaching assistant at Michigan State University, I taught undergraduate level pre-calculus courses. I then taught high school mathematics courses, general mathematics through pre-calculus, at Pequannock Township High School in New Jersey for 5 years. For the last 28 years I have been a pension actuary and consultant to large pension plans, during which time I have made numerous presentations to plan trustees and participants, and have also taught the basic pension course for the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries.
