I have been tutoring and teaching since my Sophomore year in high school. At that time I was teaching English as a second language to a few foreigners who were visiting my school. Since that time, I've gone on to teach elementary level through high school children/teens in various subjects with the boys and girls clubs of america. I make sure that when I teach, I prep each lesson for that individual person. No one learning plan can teach every single person, so I hand-tailor things for each student.

My style of teaching is one of direct questioning to be sure the student is understanding the information being povided, and the student is capable of retaining that knowledge. During my college years I worked closely with younger students who needed help with studies, and since my graduation from college continue to work with those that need assistance with various topics of learning. I have a wide range of capabilities including math, science, biology, public speaking, geography, and politics. While I work full time Monday through Friday during the day, I am available evenings and weekends.

I enjoy working with students of all ages. I strive to encourage students to develop a love for learning and the ability to learn independently. Each person has a different learning style so I like to allow students to take an active role in designing the method in which they will best learn the material. The best activities require students to take the initiative to meet the demands of the material, but allow them to collaborate with me to solve problems. I act as a consultant to the students, guiding and redirecting their focus and motivation when necessary, but permitting them to create an environment in which they can learn to appreciate the material and cultivate a stronger desire to learn. I see teaching as a dialog between teacher and student and adjust the speed and depth of my teaching to best help the student succeed. Most importantly I want to the student to leave with a greater understanding of the subject than when they entered. I taught recitation for Honors Differential Equations, Differential Equations, Calculus 3, Calculus 2 and Introduction to Computer Science as an undergraduate at Georgia Tech and physics and astronomy labs as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I enjoy seeing expressions of accomplishment when students truly grasp various concepts. I expect and demand "excellence," recognizing that "excellence" is a term relative to the student. It seems to me that students retain information most successfully when it has been presented so as to be personally relevant, so I attempt to tailor examples to the student's background. Most of my experience has been as an engineer. I have worked on projects in Europe, Asia, and all over North America. I got involved tutoring high school students while my sons were in high school. Recently, I completed an MA in Education, and taught science and math for about a year and a half in a couple of Louisiana High Schools. I have a broad background for providing real-world examples of implementations of math and science.

I graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I spent a year as a Substitute Teacher in Lincoln, NE. I then took a year and a half break from teaching to recruit for a small college. I went back into teaching as a grade 7-12 mathematics teacher. I was responsible for the 7th grade through pre-calculus courses at Wheatland Public Schools in Madrid Nebraska. This school was then combined into Grant Public Schools. I am also a strong technical trainer in my current role and provide necessary computer and analytical training to all new associates at the current company I work for. I teach to the student. I find exactly what their strengths are and incorporate it in some way to learn something new. Education is a set of building blocks and can only be as strong as the foundation.

I like to make teaching fun. I pride myself on my ability to add fun through puzzles, arts and crafts, etc. and teach all at the same time. It is so rewarding when a child you are working with accomplishes what they may have though to be the impossible. All children, as adults, are sponges that are wanting to absorb all that is around them. I feel that my previous experience in working with children is my resume. I have been a Human Resources Manager for past 10 years. A good portion of my job is involved with training. While there are differences in training/teaching adults versus young adults and children, the basics are still the same.
