I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" I believe the key to good teaching is understanding the subject from the student's perspective. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge.
