My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : This is a stress response

I have over 30 years experience with Special Education. From 2002 - 2011 I was lead teacher in a Comprehensive Developmental Classroom K-2. It was during that time in my search to be an effective teacher that I found Dr. Svetlana Masgutova PH.D. "MasgutovaMethod.com". As educators we are taught to only look at the brain as the source of intellect, that is, the cortex or higher order thinking part of the brain. My understanding now is that if there is a problem with protection and survival (brain stem) we have to correct that in first order because it is the ultimate foundation for higher order thinking. I have worked in the field of School Psychology for public schools in the state of Virginia. Most of my experience has been in rural areas where many different types of needs had to be handled by the Psychologist. Thus, I have had broad experience and training in the area of Special Education. I also worked in private practice and with other professionals which further broadened my skills. I retired in 2009 and moved to Tennessee to care for a family member. I miss contact with students, and feel I can help children who are struggling with school. My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : My friend and her daughter are both ADHD. Each child is unique.

Teaching brings me pleasure. What I do is to show them, help them, then have them do whatever I am teaching them to do. Sometimes one of the steps may have to be repeated, but this process really works well.
I have tutored my friend's daughter in math and English. I have assisted her with science and social studies projects. Her ADHD can inhibit the learning process, but we are able to work through the problems. Learning about weighted blankets helped me work with her. She is a kinetic learner. my nieces are both visual learners. I have to adapt to each learning style.
