A Little Bit About Me...

I make sure that when I teach, I prep each lesson for that individual person. No one learning plan can teach every single person, so I hand-tailor things for each student.
I have been tutoring and teaching since my Sophomore year in high school. At that time I was teaching English as a second language to a few foreigners who were visiting my school. Since that time, I've gone on to teach elementary level through high school children/teens in various subjects with the boys and girls clubs of america.

I enjoy working with students of all ages. I strive to encourage students to develop a love for learning and the ability to learn independently. Each person has a different learning style so I like to allow students to take an active role in designing the method in which they will best learn the material. The best activities require students to take the initiative to meet the demands of the material, but allow them to collaborate with me to solve problems. Good teaching requires knowing both where a student is currently and where they need to go next. It is important to understand that each student may take a slightly different path in getting from "here" to "there." My goal is to focus on the strengths and find ways to overcome the weaknesses.
After teaching 2 years at a large public High School, I spent 5 years as a Research Chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. This experience gives me a practical understanding of research and science that I could not have achieved had I limited my career to teaching alone. For the past year I have been teaching at the LPS Science Focus Program where I have greatly diversified my experience. While in teachers college I decided to pursue a degree in Biochemistry to strengthen my content knowledge. Having a science degree in addition to a teaching degree is a definite advantage.

I enjoy seeing expressions of accomplishment when students truly grasp various concepts. I expect and demand "excellence," recognizing that "excellence" is a term relative to the student. It seems to me that students retain information most successfully when it has been presented so as to be personally relevant, so I attempt to tailor examples to the student's background.
Most of my experience has been as an engineer. I have worked on projects in Europe, Asia, and all over North America. I got involved tutoring high school students while my sons were in high school. Recently, I completed an MA in Education, and taught science and math for about a year and a half in a couple of Louisiana High Schools.
