During my four years at East TN State University (ETSU), I tutored college students in General and Organic Chemistry, and multiple Psychology courses. I also taught for Kaplan Test Prep in small classes and prepared high school students for the SAT and ACT. I graduated in 2004 with a BS in Psychology. I then went to South College to get my teaching certificate. I student taught for 16 weeks under two wonderful mentoring teachers, and started subbing in January 2005. In August 2005 I received a full-time teaching position, and that is my current career. I love teaching and tutoring children of all ages. Although I have only formally been tutoring for about 6 years, I was a tutor all through my childhood helping other children learn when I finished with my classwork. I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. This teaching style results in a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable responding to my questions and asking for further clarification about complex topics. Many students have told me that my teaching style is refreshing and they feel comfortable in class. With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable. Each person learns at an individual pace. I use the Gardner system of multiple intelligences to facilitate individual learning style. I do not believe something is impossible to learn, or unteachable. Patience is a moral and ethic rule with my personal professional style. I have spent much of my spare time working within the community at youth centers, soup kitchens and veteran administration homes. As a special education teacher, I am required to possess patience. I feel I have a great deal of patience, as I taught students with moderate to severe disabilities. My teaching style was one in which I developed creative ways to achieve specific life goals. Age appropriate materials and activities were a must in my classroom and although a student may have been learning his/her colors, I would use functional things to teach them such as road signs, rather than the common elementary objects such as balls, counting bears, etc. I believe that all students are handicapped, some just more so than others. I have my p-5 degree in every subject and my k-12 special education degree in learning and behavior disorders. I have worked with all ages and am knowledgeable in my field of work.
