My background in Atmospheric Sciences gives me a good base in science and math. I feel my skills will allow me to tutor with both science and math classes, including Calculus I and II classes. I have spent over a year at Project for Pride for Learning in Minneapolis tutoring low income people on basic and moderate computer skills and job searching advice when I was an volunteer there from May 2008 to July 2009.
I have a positive approach to teaching. I am very patient when I go through the lessons and go back and review any older material if it is needed in order to grasp the current lesson of the day. After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. I have also owned and operated a daycare in my home for over three years. Currently have have spent the past two years as a substitute teacher for the Buffalo, MN school district. This is a job I love for the simple fact that I have variety everyday. It is also a great way to stay up to date on all subject matter. I am also in the process of earning my Master's Degree in Education.

My experience working with the Minnesota Math Corps program has allowed me to work with a variety of students who are at different levels in math. I have learned a great deal in this time about how to structure lessons for my students in ways that not only teach them the process of doing the work, but also the background information about why things work the way they do. I prefer to break a lesson up into a few parts, starting with the student being able to use manipulatives to physically show how to work throught the subject, then moving on to representational and abstract portions that allow the student to further apply and practice what they are learning.

I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student.
