I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. I know that the content knowledge is an essential ingredient for a tutor; however, to be truly effective, i believe a tutor must combine content knowledge with empathy, honesty and humor. In addition I demonstrate a caring attitude. Caring consists of being organized for the tutoring session, being punctual and gaining the students trust.
I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. I have also owned and operated a daycare in my home for over three years. Currently have have spent the past two years as a substitute teacher for the Buffalo, MN school district. This is a job I love for the simple fact that I have variety everyday. It is also a great way to stay up to date on all subject matter. I am also in the process of earning my Master's Degree in Education.
I have been very successful at adapting my teaching style to fit the age and subject that I am teaching. I am easily able to gain students respect and attention, which has also made me a very useful substitute.
