I find starting out with the basics and working up to the harder subjects is important. So, with the assignment given I also ask other questions of the student to see if they understand the more basic concepts of the problem as well as answer the question. I find this helps them understand the process more completely and the student ends up giving more complete answers on assignments and exams. Sometimes, while defining a problem, it is also important to look at the problem critically and identify why certain attributes are arranged in a certain order.
