I have over 30 years of experience in the oil industry, initially in quality control, but quickly promoted to programmer after writing some programs on my own time to help with the quality control. My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : I have my bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering so complicated math is my favorite. I love to teach it and share my tricks of solving with students. I have taught and tutored High school and college math for the past 3 years! I have helped many students earn higher grades and gain a better understanding.

First, I like to determine a student's learning styles. Not all student learn the same. There are visual learners who learn by looking and writing. There are tactile learners who learn by doing and moving around (hands-on activities), then there are auditory learners who learn from hearing the information. I accommodate all styles int he classroom, but when tutoring, I assess the child by doing a learning style inventory which allows me to determine what style that particular child has. For visual learners, we use the basic paper and pencils, they watch me work. I model problem solving for them and then monitor them. For tactile learners, we pull out materials we can use our hands to work s with. I use a Socratic method whereby the student is encouraged to think about the math problem and generate suggestions about how to characterize it. Once the student's mind has been stretched a bit, I begin adding hints that direct the student's thought process in the direction of the solution.
