Experienced, unconventional Latin and English teacher

Personal, humorous, and energetic. I tailor games and activities to each class and do not think teaching directly from a text inspires many to learn. Typical key elements of my courses include flexible lesson planning, personalized tests/quizzes, adding cultural content, and incorporating student ideas as much as possible.
I have over 20 years of experience working as a university instructor and private teacher for students ages 11-50. Most of my experience has been in English as a Second Language programs for community colleges and research universities, including M.I.T. and Tufts University. For the past several years I have been assisting middle and high school students with Latin (I have studied over 11 years of that language) and have also tutored beginning German and English writing.

I believe that education should be a voyage of discovery for both the student and the teacher. All too often students become demotivated and demoralised, losing faith in their instincts and abilities. Through sensitive tutoring I aim to reawaken an enthusiasm for learning in my students - to tap into their natural curiosity and resourcefulness to enable them to take ownership of their education and meet their potential. I have a strong working knowledge of different learning styles and teaching theories and am careful to tailor lessons to learners' specific needs and aptitudes.
I have a First Class BA in English from Oxford University and a Masters in Film. I am a huge supporter of the idea that anyone can learn anything that they desire. With that being said, it seems that there should be no problem with students learning mathematics; but there is. Many children have no desire to learn mathematics because they see no relevance for it in their daily lives. I very much enjoy working with children and when I tutor, I enjoy making math more fun and relevant for them. I have had much success doing so, for I have a strong ability to put understanding in students' minds, where understanding did not previously exist. I believe that good education can make a world of difference in children's lives.

As a graduate of the University of Georgia, I was very much driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education and consider myself an avid and life-long learner and a lover of education in all forms. I have earned a bachelors degree, in both English and Anthropology and a certificate in American Sign Language.
