Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.
I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored for two years at the Iowa State University Tutors Office, Iowa State University, Ames, IA. I tutored anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology. I taught for one year at Graceland University, Des Moines, IA
I don't have a style. When I left high school in rural Iowa I was told I was retarded and would never even be able to write a check. At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ. I don't teach I allow the student to learn in an environment where they are listened to, talked with(not to) and treated like they have value and worth. I treat them the opposite way I was treated. And when they do well we cheer together!

More About This Tutor...

As a scientist, I have the unique opportunity to present science as a living discipline. It is my belief that my experience in designing experiments, interpreting results, writing papers and applying for grants can enrich the understanding and appreciation of science for a biology or chemistry student. It makes a great difference to be able to teach science as a process instead of a simple collection of facts. Also, my veterinary medicine education background allows me to present a unified view of the world, by being able to explain the connections between concepts as ecology, evolution, physiology, and cell and molecular biology. Lots of anecdotes from past career experiences of mine and of former research colleagues I can use for making a point to my students, and they really love that!
Soon after graduating the Vet Med Faculty and obtaining my DVM diploma, I started a career in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine curriculum at my university, I am brimming with knowledge of these applications. Once my students have gained an understand of all the cool stuff we can do with knowledge in these avenues, they tend to absorb concepts much more readily. I have also found that my general excitement for the subjects I am teaching rubs off on my pupils.
Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I cur ... read more
