My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade. I am certified K-6th grade. I also taught advanced and Intermediate math and language arts in a GED/HiSet program. I currently teach ESOL/CIVICS for an Adult School.

I have taught 5th Grade Math and Science, 3rd Grade, 2nd Grade as an Interventionist, Kindergarten, and most recently Advanced Math and Language Arts / ESOL/CIVICS in and Adult GED/HiSet program. I have the ability to motivate and light the fire of interest in my students by incorporating in my teaching full emersion projects. Using an approach that fully immerses my students in the subject they are learning gives them the opportunity to learn firsthand instead of being merely a receiver of information. I call this approach “Walk a mile”. I have used this approach in many of my student teaching as well as substituting experiences. For example, in a second grade class that was learning about reading maps I became Pirate Scary Sherry and took the students on a treasure hunt. I dressed like a pirate and told the students that I buried a treasure somewhere in the classroom. I made s ... read more

My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Everyone learns in a different way.

I have tutored my friend's daughter in math and English. I have assisted her with science and social studies projects. Her ADHD can inhibit the learning process, but we are able to work through the problems. Learning about weighted blankets helped me work with her. She is a kinetic learner. my nieces are both visual learners. I have to adapt to each learning style.
Teaching brings me pleasure. What I do is to show them, help them, then have them do whatever I am teaching them to do. Sometimes one of the steps may have to be repeated, but this process really works well.

A Little Bit About Me...

Along with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, I have many educational experiences in the area of science, math, history (to name a few). And in all levels of the educational process; from elementary through high school and even collegiate. My previous experience has included high school students and many college undergrads.
My personal style varies on the pupil. These may vary from simply being frustrated with the curriculum to a myriad of influences. My style is considered out of the box, meaning that if the standard method does not "click" with him/her, then I enjoy finding something of interest to them, to relate that to the subject at hand. Keeping a students interest is paramount to keep them enthusiastic about learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in basic teaching with practice, and feedback. The differeniation of individual learning styles is always taken into consideration. My primary focus has been on 6th grade math and pre-algebra and having students understand the step-by-step process so they can not only know where the are, but where they are going and where they have been in mathematic skills. Working with ESOL students of many cultures has been a plus and has been a great part of my education focus when teaching English. I do not speak a second language, but have the necessary skills to help students that speak a different language as their first language.
As primarily a middle grades teacher, I have 33 years of classroom experience and 25 years of private tutoring. My basic focus has been 6th grade math and the education of ESOL students. I hold 2 degrees in elementary eduction and an ED. Specialist in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During the past two years, I have taught Medical Terminology at the college level. Previously, I wrote and presented workshops for early childhood education teachers. Not only did this allow me to teach, it required me to continue my education in all academic areas. With a bachelor degree in Human Services Management and an associate degree in Medical Technology, I have gained much experience in Math, Science, Management and Public Speaking.
My goal is to help each child reach his or her potential. The best way to do this, is to first identify the child's learning style. When this is defined, projects should be tailored to fit that style. I prefer to use a hands-on approach to any subject and present each idea being studied in numerous ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching children. I left working in a commerical insurance job to pursue my passion to work with students. I love to see children glow when they finally get a concept. You can see the light go off when they understand. This is exciting to me as well as the students. I see students, who have given up hope to learn, and become a behaviorial problem because of their inablitilites to read; which is fundamental to be successful in any subject. My real love is working in small groups. I feel this gives me the chance to work more directly with students to undertand their learning styles as well as their deficiencies or sufficiencies in a subject area.
I have been involved with elementary students through the Hamilton County Schools System where I have substituted with long term substitution positions for grade levels K and 5th Grades. Through these positions, I have been invol ... read more

All students can learn. It is important for the teacher to begin with what the student knows and build on his/her strengths to accelerate learning. Acute observation and data collected through assessments should be used by the teacher to create a positive learning environment. As the student experiences success with learning, he/she will also gain confidence and a more positive self-image. Collaboration with parents is essential for success, and the teacher must strive to create an atmosphere of open communication.
For the past four years, I have taught first grade students who are struggling with reading, utilizing the Reading Recovery framework. I am passionate about education and ensuring that children can grasp the concepts that will make them successful later in life. In say this, I believe that all children have the capability to learn, just not necessarily in the same manner. Through my years of experience in teaching, I have learned to adjust styles to fit the needs of the student. I utilize positive approaches to learning, and have found that visual approaches really cement the data being related to the student.
