Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.
I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.

I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be learned.
I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. I tutored them both at home and at a computer lab on an internet program. That position was cut because of budget cuts. I benefited from the liberal arts education I received from the University of Puget Sound, which offered a diverse selection of classes and an exploratory environment in which to pursue my studies. For two years, I studied Chemistry and Biology while also taking classes in the Humanities. I eventually majored in International Political Economy and obtained minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies. During my undergraduate years, I studied in Oaxaca, Mexico and received a grant for summer research. Upon graduation I spent a year doing anthropology research in Peru on a Fulbright grant, while also becoming fluent in Spanish and learning a third language, Quechua.

Getting my Ph.D. in English has given me the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. During the last seven years I have been tutoring students at all grade levels, from elementary school through high school, as well as teaching classes in English at several universities. I have tutored children in test-taking skills (including math, vocabulary, and critical reading skills) for the SAT and for private school entrance exams. I have also helped students with their writing at all grade levels, on such common problems as grammar, clarity, and learning how to elaborate on one's ideas.
I have always seen teaching as a matter of reigniting a natural curiosity which all students have, and directing it toward an academic subject. My priority as a tutor is to help students feel confident about their own ability to master the material. For each student this requires a diff ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Every child has a window of time when learning to write and read is at its peak. I’ve observed this can begin as early as three or four years of age. Yet the child who discovers his/her fascination with language at the age of eight is no less gifted. So I believe patiently leading children through auditory, kinesthetic and auditory learning channels will grant them opportunities to learn rapidly. Methods like Nellie Edge’s “Early Literacy” or the “Right to Read” program offer them these chances at appropriate ages in the classroom. Tutoring offers exceptional chances at all ages because nothing matches one-on-one assistance.
The voyage of deepening a child’s enthusiasm to write and read well is so delightful and satisfying! This revelation didn’t come in my writing courses in high school or college but when I taught my four children to read and write. Now that they’re all in colleg ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy learning and try to pass along some of my enthusiasm to my students. I will work with the student to find the best methods for us to approach the material so he or she will have the greatest success. I believe that creating a structure assists in the learning process, but the structure may be different for different people. This is not to say that I impose a rigid schedule or formula to the tutoring sessions, but I do work to create of flow for the the study session which will consistently show the student his or her progress each time.
After returning to college to get my teaching certificate I taught 5th grade for one year. I then taught at a high school in Salinas, California for four years. A Little Bit About Me...

I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.

Teachings students one-on-one is the love of my life. I see progress in this format that is outstanding. Students can make several levels of progress in a short period of time. Providing a positive, constructive and enthusiastic environment is foundational to the success of the student. The teacher also must show by their actions that they are very interested in the success of the student. With positive interventions, there will be a positive difference in the life of the tutored child.
The biggest motivation of my teaching career is to hold a high standard of expectation. I have a MA in Special Education, and a BA in Business Administration. A Little Bit About Me...

I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Most of all, I am an interested learner, in a variety of subjects, and I am excited to share my interest with others. I have a good sense of when I am being understood, and when I am not. I ask for questions, both so that I can explain myself, and so that that subject might be brought to greater depth.
My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory sci ... read more
