A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. A Little Bit About Me...

While earning my BA in history, I was able to lean many aspects of history. My studies ranged from the Mild Ages to the 1960s and current. I was also able to intern with the Sherburne County History Center where I learned on the job techniques and how to interact with children. Though teaching was not my primary role at the History Center, I was exposed to many opportunities not only to teach but to help others track down their lineage.
Teaching comes easily to me especially with high school and college age students. I highly enjoy accelerated history, critical thinking and exploring the odd details of history. I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.
I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. I have also owned and operated a daycare in my home for over three years. Currently have have spent the past two years as a substitute teacher for the Buffalo, MN school district.
