A Little Bit About Me...

My passion for education blossomed while volunteering as a tutor with Somali refugee children in Pittsburgh, PA during college. I worked with families in their homes to develop English reading, writing, and speaking skills. After graduating with a B.A. in History and Political Science I joined Teach For America, where I taught first grade for two years and substitute taught pre-kindergarten through fifth grade for one year. A major focus while teaching first grade was developing literacy skills and instilling a love and enthusiasm for reading and writing in my students.
The most important thing about my teaching style is that I believe every child can achieve academic excellence and can be interested in learning. Creative, innovative, and interesting lessons are my forte. I am experienced in providing a constructivist-based approach to knowledge acquisition. Hands-on lesson promote student involvement and increase the development of student responsibility towards their education. I have found that a cross-curriculum approach to the material being presented fosters true understanding and relevance.
I am a student of history and believe that knowledge acquisition comes from interest and enthusiasm on the part of the learner. This interest comes from having an instructor who them selves is a learner. A partnership in the tasks being presented usually results in the student wanting to understand the information and making connections. I began teaching as an emergency substitute 3rd grade teacher. After 2 years, my husband's career took us to NY, OK, and PA where I continued to teach Religious Ed and substitute in parish schools. I worked as a legal assistant (financial, transactional) for 13 years prior to law school and after obtaining my JD - Cum Laude, I completed my BSLS requirements. I have taught Civil Procedure I and English as a Second Language at the local community colleges (legal assistant program and adult education program). A Little Bit About Me...

I have coursework in special education and human development and family studies that has prepared me to work with children and families. My volunteer and paid experience as a substitute and child care teacher has allowed me to apply this knowledge directly to working with this group. In addition, I have mentored high school youth in the areas of scholarship and community service. As a freelance grant writer and nonprofit management professional, my reading and writing skills would be invaluable to young children.
