A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching children of all ages is my passion. A few of my skills include the ability to be able to communicate with children on a level they understand, assess their learning style, and provide access to materials that will enhance their learning. Because I have taught at the Homelink program for so long and have worked with children of all ages, I feel comfortable with any age or learning style, and am very patient. Children learn through discovery, and that is how I teach.
I graduated with honors from Eastern Washington University and began teaching in the public school in Newport. During the three years with that school district, I tutored during the summers, usually in reading and writing, though I have tutored math, history, and science as well. Although I value my college degree in biology and formal education, my real love for learning and teaching has been honed over the years teaching my own kids at home. I've homeschooled them in every general subject for the last eight years. I have developed a love and knowledge for history, government, the sciences, writing, and mathematics up through algebra. I feel confident in tutoring childen in these topics up through the high school years. I have experience teaching children with attention deficit problems and high energy levels.

I am very flexible with my communication style, and can easily and quickly assess and tailor my teaching style with whomever I am teaching. I like thinking of sharing knowledge as a mutual endeavor, and less like a one way street. While I may "know" more about a particular subject, it is always refreshing to share knowledge with others who may develop a different, unique, and interesting perspective with the material, as human development and advancement does not happen alone. I firmly believe children often have the best ideas, as they are unhindered by the nay sayers of the adult world, and tend to explore with their imagination and sense of wonder.
