I have a relaxed, stress-free teaching style, while staying on task and topic. I make sure the pupils really understand the material by breaking things down to the basics, and reviewing the foundations. After reviewing and application of the concepts, I have my students switch roles and "teach" me the material. I believe if you can explain the material to someone else, you really understand it.
I double-majored in biology in chemistry in undergrad, so the field of science and medicine is my first love and my strength. I have also received a Masters of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology, and have since completed my 2nd year of medical school. I have always had a strong affinity for math and english as well. Language Arts is one of my top subjects! I hold a Master's degree in special education and am experienced as a K-5 special education teacher in all areas of language arts. I work with students with other health impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and specific learning disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. I am certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators as an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator. Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory literacy approach that includes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, and writing. Summer Reading/English Tutor

I tutored two boys ages 6 and 9 in the areas of reading and spelling. I have been tutoring them on and off during the school year for the past 2 years. I also teach English classes once a week during the school year at the Immigration Center of America (ICA) in Farmville, VA during the school year. I teach basic English and grammar to adults who are non-native English speakers.
Fun! I try my best to make tutoring sessions interactive and engaging so that kids enjoy learning. I pick topics, books, vocabulary that is interesting to the student, when possible.

I usually like to meet with a person and understand their basic needs, before I decide which was to approach their tutoring - not every person learns the same way, so I approach each situation differently.
While attending Mary Baldwin College, I not only majored in English, but also worked as a tutor in the school writing center. As a tutor, I worked with students (freshmen-seniors) on basic editorial skills, correct punctuation, and the overall writing process (brainstorming, rough drafts, final copies, etc). Reach One Teach One

Teaching is not only my passion but my calling. Having had the opportunity to teach both fifth and second grade specializing in reading I have learned very helpful techniques.
