Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! One of the best breaks from lab work in graduate school was teaching and tutoring! I have taught as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for three years in organic chemistry (6 semesters), teaching both in the lab and in the class. During this time, I also tutored for both Organic Chemistry I and II on the side (class or lab). I also have four years of actual organic chemistry research under my belt!

While I initially went to graduate school to become a research scientist, my focus shifted to teaching after I found out I enjoyed it so much! I took on multiple students in one-on-one tutoring sessions every semester, and helped them to succeed in organic chemistry. College students fear organic chemistry more than most classes, but I assure you I can make it not only understandable, but pretty simple! There are a handful of basic principles (pKa, electronics, reactivity, etc.) that I use in concert with a student's homework, exams, and practice problems to turn organic chemistry from an overwhelming, impossible, memorization-fest into a predictable, easy-to-understand course. A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and a minor in Biochemistry ins 2007 from the University of Colorado. I attended the University of Hawaii briefly where I was a teaching assistant for freshman level general chemistry lab. I taught lab, prepared quizzes, tests, and oversaw the general safety of my students. I also during this same time worked in the tutorial room where students of all levels of chemistry could come in with questions regarding homework, quizzes, and questions prior to the exam.
I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. I also was a "Mad Science" instructor, teaching after school programs to grades k-12 in science. Upon graduation, I worked as a medicinal chemist for 5 year and attended law school at night. I completed my law degree in 2006 and now currently work at Vanderbilt University negotiating research agreements. I believe that all children have the potential to become successful, lifelong learners. I also believe that I have the kindness and patience that's required to work one-on-one with students and help explain difficult concepts in a way that they can understand. It is very important to listen to the students and ask them where they are having trouble, and help explain the concepts slowly and clearly. I also understand how some students may feel because I, too, needed a tutor at one time in high school.
I have student teaching experience in physical science at the eighth grade level as well as biology at the high school level. Being a Chemistry major, I have exceptional knowledge in Science and Math. I have worked with children from Elementary to High School. I have tutored/taught highly intelligent children and some resource students. Working as a substitute teacher, I developed many techniques and strategies to get children to understand. While working at a Youth Development Center, I engaged with teenage girls whom were not interested in learning, but I was able to gain their attention and get them involved in the learning process.
