For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. My students have always appreciated my ability to look at problems and subjects from different angles. I like to use every day metaphors for teaching math problems and also try to teach students how to use a "process of elimination" style. For example, it is easier to identify whether or not an object is a cell phone by picking out one trait that a cell phone has and determining if the object has that trait rather than describing all the traits of the object and then determining if it is a cell phone.
