I decided to become a teacher in 7th grade when two teachers in a time of family crisis turned my life around and turned me on to learning. I majored in elementary education, earned a dual master's degree in culturally disadvantaged education and reading through a federal fellowship. I have pursued multiple post masters course in a wide variety of institutions. I have literally taught every level from nursery school to graduate school. In 1976 I left the blue-collar world and returned to college, strongly motivated to learn. In 1980 I acquired a BA in Geography (3.81 gpa in my major, 3.53 overall), with a minor degree in Environmental Geology (3.6 gpa). During my last three years of undergraduate study I was the departmental tutor in Physical, Cultural and Economic Geography. Awarded a teaching assistantship at the University of Maryland Graduate School (College Park) in 1980, I taught undergraduate courses in Geography for two years.
