"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

My comments on tutoring Chess : I know the basic moves and strategies.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

Since receiving my Elementary Education Degree fifteen years ago, I have had the opportunity to experience the many different aspects the teaching profession offers. Prior to relocating to Florida I taught for 4 years in Pennsylvania and this is my eleventh year with Pinellas County Schools. I presently teach 5th grade at San Jose Elementary in Dunedin and am currently seeking my Masters Degree through USF. I am currently a student at St. Petersburg College in pursuit of a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. I have taken many specialized courses as to how students learn as well as observing many hours to discover how students learn. I have also worked in multiple after school programs where I have worked in academic atmospheres to promote student learning.
My teaching style is pretty flexible. Depending on how the child learns affects the way I would work with them. I usually use examples and support the child with help if they are learning something they have never seen before. I do not rush a child to learn a subject. We can try different ways of learning and figure out which is easiest for the student to use. My goal is to make sure the student becomes successful in school. I think I can make learning fun and interesting for young children.

I really love teaching. I also think that anybody can grasp any concept in any subject as long as they are subject to a good teacher that knows how to get down to the student's level. This helps the teacher to realize that the student doesn't know everything that the teacher knows, and therefore, has to realize that he has to break down the material in simple, approachable sections so that the average student can comprehend it easily.
I am a University of Tampa graduate with a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and an Associate's Degree in Mathematics. Also, I am fluent in Greek, and perfect with both writing and speaking skills. I've been tutoring classmates all of my life, not professionally, but just to help out. I've also tutored my brothers and sisters in math throughout their high school and college careers. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a teacher. If you were to ask me to describe myself using three words, I would say that I am caring, compassionate, and committed. John Lubbock once said, "If we succeed in giving the love of learning, the learning itself is sure to follow." This is a quote that I strive to live by, as well as demonstrate daily in my teaching style. I firmly believe in education both as a tool in investing in the future, as well as an opportunity to make a positive difference in children's lives. :)
In 2005, I graduated from Clearwater Christian College with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (K-6) as well as an ESOL endorsement.
