I first question the students in what they already know to see the areas that need less instruction. Then I ask them problems from their school texts and see how they do. This will give me some knowledge of where the student is failing and the area that needs more support. I then ask them at the session's end if they learned something and how that makes them feel. This is most important because if the student does not feel that they are learning and what the knowledge can be used for, they will loose interest and not pay attention in class. This is why many fail technical courses because unlike other subjects, math and science builds upon itself so if you do not learn the basics first, the next topics will be harder to grasp.

I belong to Mensa and the NCTM, and have excellent English and decent Spanish speaking and writing skills. I have taught and tutored in mathematics and computer science for quite awhile, and I earned a 95% on my PSAT and a 32 on my ACT.
Generally, I'm a constructivist, and I believe the best method of tutoring is providing a completely individuated scaffold for any student. When I was a classroom teacher, I tried as much as possible to individualize my instruction. I would begin each lesson with whole class instructions, but once the students began the work, I would move around the room in order to give more focused attention to those that required it. My classroom always focused on personal progress rather than comparisons. I believe that learning is most likely to occur when students believe in their own ability to learn and are able to discuss and reflect on their own learning.
