I hold a BS in Chemistry from Utah State University and have completed the requirements for a MS in Chemistry from the University of Oregon. I have a great physics and math background and have completed courses in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, etc. During the 2006-07 school year I helped teach third and fourth year undergraduates in the physical chemistry laboratory at the universityn. There really is nothing I enjoy more than a good tutoring session. I like passing on the knowledge I have, and especially to students who have trouble, and then find success in working with me. I introduce every new math idea in the purest conceptual form, and then I show the student the practical use they can apply in their homework or on tests. I am a big fan of flashcards or a sheet of notes that reflect everything we learned in the session together. It enables me to show the parents our progress, as well as a resource for the student to refer to for help during homework or test prep. I have found that my methods work well for students who struggle with the basics and want to pass a class, and it also works well for students who are already at the top of their class, and just want a boost to cement their understanding or prepare for a future class.

I have somewhat a charismatic style of teaching in that I can quickly get excited when I'm teaching. When I teach, I am very organized and have a firm grip on I'm trying to relay across to my students, because I feel that one of the worse things a tutor can do to a student is to get up to teach and sound as if he or she doesn't know what they are talking about. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.

As a graduate in meteorology with a minor in math, I have had plenty of experience with math and science. I have had the pleasure of sharing this knowledge by tutoring children in these fields. My first experience occurred when I was a senior in college: I tutored students in math individually and in groups. It was enjoyable to assist students in Algebra up to Calculus. As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.
I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.

I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. I like to have several tricks in my bag so that if one approach does not work I will have other methods to try to allow others to grasp the same material in a different way that makes sense to them.
