First I write down the rules for students to use as a guide to solve problems. I believe the old saying "repetition is the father of learning" is very true. As a student in college, I had a professor who would walk into the class room, and begin writing example after example. I have adopted that approach because it helps students become familiar and establish a routine to problem solving. Then I solve some more similar problems while explaining the rules in each step. Finally after solving many problems of my own, the students solve problems from the text book. I also provide references to material that can help advance the student’s knowledge.
As a student, I was gifted in math. I went through school rarely scoring anything lower than a 95 in math courses. I routinely tested in the 99 percentile on standardized test, and as a 6th grader test showed I was already on the 11th grade ... read more

Teaching others cannot be defined by one style of teaching. The way to teach is by learning first how the student receives the information. Auditory learners and Visual learners require two different methods of teaching. The key is to make the information understandable to the student by breaking the information down in any format. Knowledge is power and satisfaction. I remember the feeling I get from learning something new and grasping the subject and I want others to feel this exciting feeling too.

I believe in completing an individual needs assessment and designing a study approach around that assessment. I believe in constant reinforcement and reassessment. I also believe it is useful to utilize as many and as varied forms of instruction as possible (written, audio-visual, demonstration, etc.) to solidify a concept. Promoting thorough understanding rather than route memory and recognition skills is paramount.
Over the years (as undergrad and graduate), I have tutored middle school and elementary age students in various subjects. After receiving my Ed.D in Curriculum and Leadership, I decided to stay in the classroom. I currently instruct 4th and 5th grade students in Social Studies, Science and Math. I have taught Math to elementary students for the past 10 years. I believe that every student can learn, however each student is unique in that they learn differently. Some times finding that unique method is a challedge. If you like teaching as I do, that challedge is not hard. The joy is in watching the child comprehend or understand. The light does go off.
My teaching style is compatable with the child's learning style. If they need visual instruction then it is visual. My style is mostly facilitator or demonstrator when tutoring. this is because the child needs you to show them the process more so that demonstrate what they know. Most children know some, just not enough to comprehend the entire ... read more

During college I noticed that every student absorbs information differently. I believe that in order to teach effectively, a tutor must not only understand which way a student learns best, but also provide an appropriate environment in which the student feels comfortable. I enjoy working with children of all ages and it is my goal to ensure that each child receives the best education possible. I believe a child's education is the most important factor in determining their success in life.

I prefer teaching students using many hands on activities, but I understand that not all students learn the same. In my classroom I try to have different types of learning mediums to help reach the many different learning styles that exist.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an adaptable teaching style. Teaching is most effective on the individual level. On the rare occasions I have been able to work one-on-one with a student, I am able to approach the material in various ways to best fit that student's needs. Most students in today's society are visual learners. Visual aides usually work the best with these students. When these students don't grasp material, usually it is because they are not able to conceptualize it. However, if you can assist by showing, the student gets a jump-start into comprehension. When i teach material, I do not simply teach What the students need to know to solve a problem. I teach higher-level thinking to allow for the students to dissect problems and understand why and how solutions work.
I have a BS in Middle Grades Education from Georgia Southern University. I am certified to teach both math and science. I have w ... read more

I believe that kids learn best when they have incentive, whether it is something they relate to or something they find interesting. I believe few will find homework interesting, unless it is relatable to their daily lives. I like to facilitate the process and let the child make his/her own discovery with minimal intrusion by the instructor. Self discovery is more satisfying than using a force fed method of rote learning.
I'm a graduate of Georgia Tech '87 with a Masters degree, since then I've worked with numerous Department of Defense contractors working on projects ranging from Image Processing to Missile Simulation. I enjoy math and like to involve myself with bright young minds by planting a seed that someday will blossom into outstanding scientist. Although my teaching credentials is somewhat limited, I thought I'd challenge myself with this new endeavor.
