I follow Gardner's Theory of Learning Styles, students do not learn in the same way, as a tutor you must look for the approach that is right for the student. Also, working with at risk students, who have experienced failure in traditonal school settings, an educator must work on the negative beliefs of the student, including that the student sees themselves as "dumb" and " not able to learn." One or 2 point increase on a TABE test, needs to be recognized. Each child is different. I always try to notice and acknowledge what benefits each student, as I think this applies to all forms of teaching from academics to athletics. Getting on their level is what ultimately benefits the child from the get go and gains their interest. If I'm interested, then the child is interested.
