A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I also like to use visual aids as well as conversation. I have found that many of us vary widely in learning styles. Some are visual learners, others are audio learners, and still others are a combination. I work well one-on-one but also enjoy small groups. I am an upcoming May 2006 graduate from Allegheny College, majoring in English. Given my background at a small, liberal arts college and being a former biochemistry major, I have a great understanding of language arts, math and science. A Little Bit About Me...

As a student myself, I know how difficult it is to learn academics by one person’s particular teaching style. I believe that you must teach by finding out your students’ interests and use those to introduce examples—this helps the student relate. I’ve learned to try out different teaching styles with my students to help me figure out the best way for them to learn. Once that is mastered, I will continue working with that particular style.
