Creating Independent Learners

My experience dates back to when I was in high school in the early 80's tutoring students and family members. I've also taught classes on Management of Aggressive Behavior / Appled Non-Violence to mental health professionals throughout the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding communities. I also worked as teacher assistant in the mental health setting working with special needs students. I've worked as a Literacy Tutor at CSN in which I developed and implemented lesson plans for a class of eleven students at the middle school . I have my Teaching credentials through NV Dept. of Education as Certified Substitute Teacher ( K- 12 ). I currently substitute/guest teach within the CCSD.
I'm a follower of traditional teaching methods. I believe in the unique triangular team-centered approach involving myself, students and parents. Creating Independent Learners by setting an atmosphere that i ... read more

Extremely Interactive and Student-Specific Methods Tailored to each Student's Needs & Goals
I consider myself to be a uniquely seasoned, qualified, and experienced tutor who can adapt to any situation and to any student in order to benefit their education and learning experience. Due to my ability to teach and tutor children and adults of all ages, (in addition to my own near-perfect scores on the SAT & ACT) I was one of the first Instructors hired by PrepExpert, a national company that specializes in preparing students for the SAT, ACT, AP, other exams, and simply for help in regular classes at all levels. This company is so successful and growing so fast because of the unparalleled improvements among students that it recently appeared on ABC's show "Shark Tank," during which Mark Cuban was impressed enough to buy a substantial stake in the company and is a current partner. Throughout my career as a student, I have always prided myself on the ability to help others learn. When I was a high school student, I was the one other students would come to with questions, and I always gave an answer with confidence. Then I got to college and began to study Biology. I was so amazed at the broad spectrum of the sciences, that I decided to add a Chemistry component to my college degree. Through Chemistry I could better understand Biology. Then I realized that the whole time, I was increasing my ability to teach and learn, so I added an Education component to my college degree, and that has brought me to the point I am at now.
As an education student, I saw many opportunities in that field. I also saw the diversity of learners, and the need for a diversity in the way education is approached. I began to challenge myself by removing limitations like language, and se ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Excellence in education and curiosity in the natural world, instilled in me since elementary school, has driven me to be an “A” student through my college education. The curriculums in premedical studies, zoology, and biological sciences, provided me the knowledge to comfortably teach and discuss math and science to all levels of pre-secondary students, while working as a temporary/substitute science/math teacher, and to college undergraduate students, during assignment as a graduate teaching assistant. A summer job as an instructor of nutrition, introduced me to teaching older adults. Tenure as a Chemist for 30 years permitted me to train and mentor new employees, coworkers, and student interns.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, especially children to whom I provide exposure and enthusiasm of learning and understanding, so that they not only understand what they need to ... read more

My approach to tutoring is not simply to regurgitate what the teacher has already said in the classroom. Students need to have tried to solve the problems on their own before I help them to get the most value from their experience with me. It does little good to the student for me to guide them entirely through each problem with out them first trying to figure it out on their own. First, this helps one to develop problem solving skills which is different from knowing the subject matter. Second, it allows me to adjust the problem solving techniques to that particular student.
While in graduate school at the University of Connecticut, I was a teaching assistant for a chemical engineering course on polymers as well as freshman chemistry. Both teaching assignments included: grading homework/test papers and providing office hours for students to visit me and go over problem solving. The ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an extensive background in Mathematics. I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland College Park. I have experience tutoring in advanced Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and SAT preparation. I feel I have sufficient expertise in Physics, Biology, and History to tutor in these areas as well.
In my tutoring experience, I have worked with a wide variety of students at different learning levels. The teaching style I employ is tailored to the needs of each individual student. With mathematics, I emphasize an understanding of the key concepts underlying individual problems. I have also found that positive reinforcement is an effective tool for helping students who may be struggling with the material.
