A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Wake Forest in 2008, double-majoring in Mathematics and Physics. I also took some courses in the Education Department, and substitute taught for public high schools and middle schools in Winston-Salem, NC and Metairie, LA. I have worked in tutoring programs for elementary school children approximately twice a week for a total of twelve months. I have recently learned HTML, PHP, and Javascript programming languages, and am the designer and programmer for the Facebook application Harry Potter House Sort.
I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. I began to realize my love and aptitude for tutoring as a volunteer Japanese instructor for the Daikin home-stay program in 2006. The next two years I volunteered my time with Rosie's International Services tutoring Spanish. At the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester, the Head of the Foreign Language Department, Dr. Maier, submitted my name to a tutoring department at UAH, where I worked tutoring Spanish, Japanese, Latin, Chinese, and English as a Second Language until I graduated in Spring 2010. Although I do not have an education degree nor teaching certificate, I was hired as a part-time Spanish teacher at Austin High School 2010-2011, where I started an informal Japanese Culture Club.
