Working with children has always been somewhat natural to me, probably due to the fact I spent so many of my summers teaching, playing, and caring for them. I was a camp counselor for five summers and my primary duty was the classroom. I was in charge of arts and crafts and teaching lessons/themes of the week. The children I worked with were ages three through eight, and two of the children were autistic. Constructive criticism and co-operative learning learning are very important to me. I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. This occurred in small groups of five or six students. I also taught Molecular Neurobiology at Friday Harbor Laboratories to graduate students who came from around the world to take the course. I look at each student as an individual. I think it is important to determine which teaching style works for that person. I would use this information to choose the best method for each student. I think it is important to make learning fun at every age. Education should not be a chore but something to embrace. It would be one of my goals to limit fears or mental blocks that a student may have because they think they can't do it. I would focus on each students potential for success.
I have worked with children age 0 to 17 over the years. I tutored my daughters friends when she was in High School in History and some English especially literacy. I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including a thirty-page research paper, and this experience made me a better writer (and eventually, a better teacher).
