A Little Bit About Me...

I am a higher education professional who has come to believe that the best way to impact students is to return to teaching. I have a long-standing interest in the philosophy of teaching. I am particularly impressed by "deep learning," a movement that emphasizes critical thinking and inquiry at all levels of teaching. I also believe in high expectations combined with a strong support system, and a common sense approach to the subject matter. I have come to believe that much "teaching" is nothing more than giving students the illusion that they have learned something; this is evidenced by the "cram and regurgitate" approach often taken by students. In my view, this approach is not true teaching or true learning.

I have enjoyed teaching in private schools of and on for the last 22 years. My bachelor degree in math and my years of experience in the classroom have allowed me to develop successful methods of student motivation and classroom discipline. Also, in recent years, I have tutored students one-on-one in my home where I have been successful pinpointing student's problem areas and addressing their individual needs. I am currently an adjunct instructor at Highland Community College in Wamego. I teach Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. I have also tutored College Algebra to some of my former students there. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Math and BS in Mechanical Engineering, which has enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays in many various areas of study. I have taught adult students in mathematics, mechanical assembly, and job skills.
