My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : While I have not had any students with Dyslexia, I have recently read The Gift of Dyslexia and feel I have an understanding of what students experience. I am willing to work on strategies to help the student at home and in school.

I like to see where the student is and meet him there. Look at what needs to be taught and discover the best way to impart that learning to the individual child.
I have taught K for 13 years. I understand the value of one on one time, and that students are all different. Recently I spent 10 months teaching missionary children in Uganda. There I taught 4th, 5th, and 7th graders. Students in my class have had vision issues, autism, aspergers, and ADD/ADHD. With each situation, I have evaluated where the student was and revamped how I was teaching to meet their needs.

I was an English teacher in China, and I am fluent in both English and Chinese. I can help tutor people who are dyslexic and people with learning disorders. I can teach basic math, typing, as well as reading and writing English. As my mother could not speak English well, I've had lots of experience helping her with reading, writing, typing, as well as how to use a computer. Over the past ten years, I have worked for four school districts providing after-school tutoring to students with a learning disability. I have worked with all subject matters from preschool thru fifth grade. I have tutored my niece, nephew and cousin's children all thru elementary school. I have extensive experience in breaking down a skill and teaching it in smaller, more manageable pieces.
I enjoy working with children, waiting for the "ah ha" moment to arrive. When it does, there is nothing, like it. I believe strongly in the saying "there are no bad students, only bad teachers". I believe that every student is capable of learning, the trick is to find a way that makes it real and applicable to each individual student. I believe that the keys to success are student motivation, the tutor's flexibility and lots of patience. Show them, let them touch it, model it, read it, br ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1974 and taught third grade for seven and a half years, then moved to another town and taught 5th grade resource for six years. I relocated to Tennessee and taught high school special education for seven years. After deciding that I enjoyed teaching younger children, I transferred to Cheatham Middle School, where I presently teach fifth grade inclusion. I taught summner school for several years, as well as doing homebound education for Cheatham County. I have also worked for A to Z Tuoring. I have had training in the Wilson Program for dyslexic children and have used the SRA Reading Program.
I chose teaching as a career because I love working with children and making a difference in their lives. I want my students to be successful and will use the technique that works best for each child. I have been to several workshops and train ... read more

I love teaching, and I have experience working with varied age levels and learning levels. As a private tutor, I have also worked with many students who have varying learning disabilities, and I have used my knowledge to help develop techniques that help them learn too. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to express complex information to diverse groups of people in an understandable way. Everyone thinks a little differently and learns differently too. I practice patience and enthusiasm with my students. I work independently with my students to find out what type of learner they are. I create a friendly rapore with my students and use constructive criticism. Teaching through theory doesn't work with every student, so I often find ways to incorporate my students' interests into their learning. I believe that learning should be fun, so I always try to make my students laugh and en ... read more

As a graduate from Peabody College, I have had terrific hands-on experience from a first-rate institution. The University as well as on-site practicum work has inspired me to spread a knowledge of Spanish through fun and interesting ways. I also stress cultural awareness as I specifically focused in multicultural education and had the opportunity to live in Montevideo, Uruguay and Santiago, Chile for a year and half. During my career I had the opportunity to work with struggling students and students with special needs as well as culturally diverse students, keying on their specific learning styles. Over the past years I have worked both in a classroom setting as well as giving lessons to students on an individual basis. I believe strongly in positive reinforcement and in establishing rapport with every student as well as with the parents. I have earned both a Bachelor's degree in ... read more

I enjoy working with children and adults. My teaching style is tailored to the individual, as individuals learn differently and at various paces. I am very patient, and flexible. I believe that structure is necessary, without sacrificing creativity. I am a firm believer that when working with children, communication with the parent(s) is necessary. Parental input/involvement is always encouraged. I believe it also key to work closely with or in conjunction with the school system and other educators involved with the child.
My experience working with children and adults with Communication Disorders/Cognitive Deficits has provided me with an understanding and experience to assist others in many areas. I have an MS in Communication Disorders. This includes learning disabilities that involve language comprehension and expression, and problem solving deficits. I have also worked ... read more

I firmly believe that teaching is about making meaningful connections that empower others. Therefore, I always try to first establish a comfortable rapport that is conducive to open communication. I then will determine the student's strengths/weaknesses and areas of highest interest. This allows me to develop individualized lessons that will be highly engaging and most effective at meeting the student's needs/learning goals.
Teaching has always come naturally to me. As a young teenager, I began helping younger siblings and neighborhood kids with their homework. As a mental health professional on an Adolescent Psychiatric Unit, I discovered that educating patients was far more empowering than implementing conventional Rogerian counseling techniques. In 1998 I began designing/facilitating classes on impulse control, assertiveness, and anger management. Ever since I have been t ... read more

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate of a small liberal arts college, I have spent many hours volunteering to help tutor my classmates in both biology and the humanities. I hold a bachelor's degree in biology. I have learned extensive grammatical skills through my school's intensive general studies program. I am confident in my ability to tutor students in mathematics, science, English and the humanities at the K-12 level and biology and English at the college level.
I believe that students best learn from doing. My role as a tutor is not just to provide answers, but to facilitate and encourage learning. However I am also able to provide a knowledge base in a number of subjects to help answer questions the student may be struggling with. I am comfortable working with children of all ages to help them meet their full learning potential as students.
