I began teaching piano in 1975, the summer after my sophomore year in high school. I continued to teach through college. As a teacher, I have been able to utilize both my BME (Bachelor of Music Education) and my Bachelor and subsequent Masters Degrees in Music Therapy to support my students wide range of learning needs. I have also taken additional classes in psychology and classes that dealt with learning disabilities. I believe that I can effectively utilize these skills as a tutor. I have worked with children for many years and in many different settings. I have observed so many different learning styles and I strive, as a teacher, to be flexible enough to help a child learn using their strengths. As a music Education major, I studied the vocal techniques and instruments of piano, flute and piccolo. I have studied piano since age four - which is 28 years - from a private teacher by the name of Judy Nihlen. I have also been a member of a French Sorority in college, speaking almost fluent French. I have composed several musical compositions growing up and all throughout college. I arranged choral piece by W. A. Mozart from a Mozart aria. I also starred in an opera my sophomore year of college. I did all this while suffering from Aspergers disorder and tics due to tourettes syndrome and ADHD. I teach children and adults according to the wishes of the learner. I firmly believe that every child is capable of learning hard concepts, they just have to be taught in a way that is applicable to them. So I first like to get to know the student and try to figure out their learning style and teach them according to how they learn. This helps me figure out where the root of the problem is so I can fix it. Then I like to use a lot of visual and hands-on lessons because children need that to really grasp concepts and to apply it in different situations. I also like to question them to lead them to come to the answer and concepts themselves in order to increase their curiosity, desire to learn, and self-esteem. I graduated recently in Elementary education, so I have a broad knowledge in all subject areas. I got in the top 15th percentile on the Praxis content knowledge test.
