I like children to learn through exploring. This is not to say that I do not teach, but I plan lessons in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper level than if I am merely telling them information. With my middle school math students whom I tutored, this meant that we learned about fractions through art. It was not enough to explain to them how fractions worked, I realized that they needed to experience fractions. While studying at SUNY ESF I held a position as a teaching assistant for Western Civilization. This involved grading exams and papers, preparing and giving lectures, and holding office hours to assist students with any questions or concerns they may have had. I also spent time volunteering to teach and after school science club through ESF Outreach for elementary / middle school aged children.
I feel as though every student will have their own niche. They will have a special subject that they enjoy the most and one that they despise.
