More About This Tutor...

I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. I have never taught a class and have tutored in only in a limited capacity. I however was apart of Virginia Tech's first Physics education class and program and found that I really actually enjoy teaching for teaching's sake. I hope that my limited experience won't scare people away; I am very passionate about these subjects and I would enjoy building up my experience and resume so that I can become an even better educator.
My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting pro ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy challenges and helping students overcome what seems "impossible". Each time I teach, I become better because students teach me how to teach them. It's important to understand individual interests and how each student approaches problems because everyone is different. For example, creating analogies is an impetus to learning. To get a better idea of how I approach this style of teaching, I wrote an article: "Education for the Young Mind: The Science Behind Pogo Sticking." I received very good feedback from fellow student-pogo sticking enthusiasts regarding what they learned and how it modified their view on education. Secondly, we need to train students to think more analytically. Even a simple problem needs to be broken down into its respective parts. This is the difference between a student knowing/memorizing the material and actually understanding the material.

I have been working with children for over ten years. My teaching style combines creativity, positivity, and flexibility. In my classroom I incorporate all these learning styles so that I can meet the needs of my diverse classroom. It is my philosophy that all students can succeed if given the chance.
A part of my undergrad included an internship that I completed overseas at an international school. This has inspired my love for English Language Learners and helping them to succeed in school.
