Hello! My name is Jennie and I am a Kindergarten Teacher as well as a junior high cheer coach. I graduated from Augustana College in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with middle grade endorsements in Mathematics and Language Arts. I have worked a great deal with children of all ages (3 +). I am currently finishing up my 3rd year as a kindergarten teacher and have LOVED every minute of it! I've also taught other grades from 1st-8th grade throughout college and student taught a 6th grade classroom. I have experience teaching all subject areas between grades k-8. I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. I provide guidance when needed, but sometimes students just need someone there to talk it out with them. If this is the case I like to ask questions until they find the answers themselves. This method not only teaches them the material, but also builds confidence because they realize they can figure out much of it themselves.

My teaching style is one which engages the student actively in the learning process. I have used the "popcorn" technique in a classroom, where I call out "popcorn", then call on someone at random. This ensures that each student in the class is following, or else they lose their turn to read. If I'm working w/ a student w/ poor reading skills, I allow them to read, and help them w/ the difficult words, encouraging them to sound out the word. I also try to engage models, and kinestetics, in the learning process. One picture=1,000 words, and one model = 1,000 pictures. I also use these techniques in teaching mathematics.
