In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I lived in Costa Rica in for 25 years and my Spanish is excellent. Because Spanish is my 2nd language I have some keen insights into how best to attack the grammar. I taught English as a second language while in Costa Rica and I have been teaching in a Dual language Program for the past 8 years.
