When tutoring students I try to take a multidimensional approach. I attempt to show the child, explain it in my own words, have the student explain it in his/her own words, and then have them apply and practice so that the material really sticks.
Throughout high school and college I helped numerous classmates develop efficient ways of studying as well as providing assistance to learning and understanding the given material. Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. Experienced Writing and Reading Comprehension Tutor

I served as a writing tutor to my peers while I was in college. I did this for three years and it seemed to help the students a great deal. This position was accompanied by training provided by one of my professors at Montreat College. The training lasted a full semester. I have also been tutoring a 14 year-old boy in reading comprehension for the past year. My comments on tutoring English : My past courses have included Myth and Human Culture, Beauty in Western Culture, Linguistic Anthropology and Literature Based Research. My method of active reading has helped several peers become more efficient in their literature based courses. As for younger students, I have completed courses in child and adolescent psychology as well as human cognitive behaviors. I do not use a cookie cutter approach to teaching reading as science has proven these "systems" ineffective. If you are looking for an individualized approach to reading and to increasing the enjoyment of reading, I may be able to help.

As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic background in developmental and cognitive psychology as well as linguistics has helped me lead and tutor peers in small group sessions for hard to grasp topics and in pre-exam sessions for consolidation of the semesters material.
