My teaching style with my own children is conversational, hands-on, and intuitive. I explore what most captures their attention, then weave in the lessons by using any available teaching aids, such as whiteboard drawings, to illustrate a point, literally.
My German parents spoke (so-called "high", or proper) German at home in NY/NJ, which came in handy after we moved overseas when I was 13. Repeating 7th grade, I learned to read and write German fluently, as well as master the local dialects and sundry colloquialisms without a lingering accent. Doing so allowed me mask my heritage, enroll in higher education, and learn a trade, culminating in a long and rewarding all-encompassing painting career abroad and in the eastern US, before settling in Texas to explore telecommunications. I originally wanted to teach children with behavioral disorders. But when I was in college there was no such major. When being interviewed for tutoring a young girl with spina bifida, I was told I would have to literally turn the pages for her. I asked if she had something wrong with her hands. Of course she did not but that is the approach I take. I assume there is nothing wrong with the child. They just need something different. It can be done with a different approach or explanation. Some just need the individual attention which gives them the confidence to understand it. I do not do their work for them.
