A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning is ongoing throughout life, and that we all differ in our learning styles. I like to present a topic so that it is fun, usually with tactile work using math manipulatives, or flash cards, props, and games that teach conceptual thinking skills, and methods of learning using visuals, as well as auditory cues.
I have been educating people since 1987. I began in music education, which I taught successfully for 9 years, and also taught piano lessons. I then worked in special education for 1 year as an educational technician, where I tutored math, reading, and students with severe disabilities. My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or his own understanding by a series of carefully structured questions. This way the student actually learns the material and can be confident in solving whatever problems are presented, so their school work goes better.
