As a volunteer with the Salvation Army I have spent many years volunteering with children, teaching Sunday School and Band. When I graduated from Norwich University, the oldest private military school in the nation with a BA in History, and spent two summers working at summer camps as a Swim instructor and lifeguard, I added to my knowledge and experience of teaching and tutoring. I have spent the last 5 years tutoring in History and music, and have general understanding of Science. I attended Houghton College for 2 1/2 years. Then I went to NCCC and earned an AS, then transferred to Charter Oak State College. They took all the credits I had earned as a student at both schools, allowed me to define my degree, told me which additional credits I needed and granted my degree. I have homeschooled my children for 15 years. My oldest is 19 and going to RIT in the fall. He has an AS which he got the week he turned 18. I also have two teens whom I currently school. I have taught them math courses including Algebra and Geometry, American History, writing, reading, etc. I also taught a class in Spanish 1 for other homeschooled students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to help a student work their way through any difficulty they are having in any of the major subjects. It is always a challenge to direct the students learning and not do the work for them. But it is a good challenge! While I was a supervisor in the ACE based Christian school, I helped many of the students in the school to understand the areas, especially of math and science, where they had difficulty. Most recently I had the challenge of tutoring my wife, who is working on her Bachelors in Healthcare Management, through Business Math and Business Algebra. Again I state that it can prove to be a great challenge, to let her do the work, and not me.

During my 23 years of teaching I implemented Kindergarten through 6th grade New York State curriculum in a classroom setting. I attended workshops that focused on computer education, Multiage classroom and positive discipline.
I believe children learn best when they can form a connection to their school work. Writing skills can be improved by using topics that are relevant to the student's life. When working on Reading skills I often use high interest topics such as the arts, sports, computers and science to encourage students to excel. Math can also become more meaningful by using real life situations and manipulatives. It is my goal to increase students' self esteem by providing situations in which they can succeed.
