My comments on tutoring PSAT : I took prep classes for the SAT but took this test mainly as an indicator of where i needed to focus for the real SAT. However, the tests are very similar and because of my expertise on the SATs I feel beyond confident in both my ability to teach the concepts and improve scores.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. My specific style of teaching, especially for the 8th grade, is to read the current book being used, and then present my lesson with lecture, interactive discussion and comprehension, based on the age and grade of the student. I like to put the lesson into terms that the age group can relate to, and then assign a memory technique that will teach the students to recall the proper answer by using the examples we have discussed in class.
