A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.
I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors.
