I am an enthusiastic teacher who loves to share my passion for chemistry. My greatest achievement as a professor has been bringing awe and excitement to the mundane: I will never forget the student who told me that she will never look at a boiling pot of the water the same way. I am patient and considerate but demanding of hard work and respect from my students. Students learn different ways, and given the opportunity and time, a teacher should try to find the best learning environment for their students. In a classroom, this can be difficult. When tutoring one-on-one, a teacher can alter their instruction methods (visual, audio, hands-on) to optimize the student's experience. I believe in the expression “that you have two ears on one mouth for a reason, in that you should listen twice as much as you speak.” You have to know what the problem is before you can begin to solve it. I learned to be patient, understanding and compassionate when dealing with a student’s learning style one-on-one. I have acquired the skills to adapt to an individual’s unique learning style by using their other senses. A student will learn most effectively by utilizing various parts of the brain by seeing it, hearing it and writing it down. And, just like learning a new person’s name, you have to repeat it over and over again in your head until it becomes learned.

I graduate May 2009 from Simmons College with a BS in Biochemistry. My courses taken during my undergraduate career were heavily focused in the sciences. I’ve taken upper level chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses. I tutored a student in zoology for a brief period of time. I was also a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry I and II labs. I often met with students outside of lab to help clarify information and help answer questions on particular concepts and problems. I am furthering my own education by attending the University of Glasgow in the fall. There I will be studying veterinary medicine, which again is heavily focused in the sciences.

I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.
I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. I'm weary of dealing with managed care and am currently a little over than a year away from getting my Masters in Education.

In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate, I was an enthusiastic student and often helped and tutored my peers. I began to tutor "professionally" my second year, teaching chemistry and mathematics to college students. I was chosen by my biochemistry professor to teach chemistry to a high school student who was a daughter of her personal friend. I was also encouraged by one of my professors to become a writing coach, which I never pursued due to the high demand of need for science tutors. After college, I taught as a temporary physics teacher in a public high school in Enosburg, VT. I taught physics, physical science, and AP physics for 4 months on an Emergency Teaching License.
