Writing/Editing is my first love that I want to share.

I have more than 10 years experience working in Journalism. My BA is specifically in News/Edit. I love to write and edit and enjoy helping others express themselves. I look forward to the oppurtunity to do so. I enjoy working with people and will always try my best to make a person feel comfortable with me. I like to make people laugh and feel that I am friendly and nice. I went into Journalism because I want to educate the world and make it a better place. My comments on tutoring Journalism : As a high school English teacher I also served as newspaper and yearbook advisor. I also worked as a freelance writer for a small town newspaper.

I believe learning should always be engaging and meaningful. It is critical to address individual student learning modalities and needs so the student can experience great success. I have always been a teacher of best practices, meaning incorporating those strategies and methodologies which are the most effective. They work because they promote high student investment and engagement.
I have been a dynamic, successful elementary, middle and high school teacher as well as college instructor of Art, English, French and History for many years. I also taught in a two way language immersion school ( English and Spanish) for six years so I can teach Beginning and Intermediate levels of Spanish. While teaching, I have always taken courses in the best practices of teaching as well as courses in subject matter content. My comments on tutoring Journalism : My Bachelors has a focus on broadcast journalism, but I also spent a few semesters on the college newspaper and I have a lot of experience with the hard and soft skills of journalism

I work best one-on-one or in small groups, I can adjust my style to what a person needs after speaking with them for a while and understanding how they learn. I've found the best way to teach someone a new way of looking at something is to understand how they currently perceive it.
I have worked in art and graphic design professionally for the past 6 years, however I have been freelancing and creating art for myself since 1998. I previously worked for the Hayward Area Historical Society, which included assisting in design for exhibits as well as some teaching to visiting school groups. I have also been asked to teach small groups of children about art, or help with general homework on numerous occasions.

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have a Journalism Degree from Iowa State University. I like to find the lead (most newsworthy point) to begin the story, make it clear and concise, and make it as complete and unbiased as possible.

I have a B.S. in Technical Journalism from Iowa State University. I worked on a sales magazine upon graduating until I was drafted into the armed forces, spending four years as a Navy Electronics Technician. On the G.I. Bill I did Television Production coursework at College of San Mateo and entered the Broadcast TV Graduate Program at San Francisco State. I did not complete my Master's degree, but my training and contacts made there led to a 35-year career in television and video editing.
Very informal and conversational. I like to laugh and joke as well as understand things that are challenging, to both pupil and teacher. Repetition with interesting variation, coming at a problem from different angles solidifies concepts and ideas in our heads.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students learn best when they feel vested in the process of learning and excited about the journey; it is always my goal to convey my passion for the learning experience and my partnership with the student in that process. I am a firm believer in active learning and thus avoid rote memorization exercises and merely showing students how to do something. I help them to wrestle with the materials, to look at concepts from every possible angle, and to learn the importance of synthesizing information and determining what is wheat and what is chaff. I am patient and friendly with my students, but my focus is always on preparing them as learners.
As a teacher and tutor for over 27 years, I have had the pleasure of helping students explore their potential, find their passion, and excel in their learning experiences. I have been the Editor-in-Chief of several journals, and have written more ... read more

My bachelor's degree in English serves as an example for the effort and time committed to education and a service to academia. I learned literary skills concerning literary forms: folklore, poetry, short story, photography, personal essay, analytical essay. My two years of high school Spanish, one year of College French, and completion of breadth college requirements provide a slight ability for me to tutor Spanish and French language, computer navigation, basic algebraic math, and basic social studies. During the last three years I tutored ESL, reading, and Astronomy at Chaffey College, overlooked K-12 after-school P.E. programs with the Boys and Girls Club, and facilitated a course in wheelchair basketball and disability at UC Berkeley.

More About This Tutor...

I approach instruction from the view that “teach[ing] a man to fish, will feed him for a lifetime”. I am committed to building on what my students bring with them, using this as a fulcrum on which to hinge their learning. This approach succeeds in helping students understand that they are capable of and even responsible for teaching themselves?–?a skill I see as a necessity in life, especially once a student can no longer expect formal instruction. In addition to my own experiences with learning several languages, I have benefited from coursework in Behavioral Psychology, which has taught me to create positive classroom atmosphere. My students note my enthusiasm for language and express appreciation for my linguistic explanations.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a student at Sonoma State University I spent a semester being a teachers assistant and then was hired in the outreach office. For three years I worked as a college rep for the university. I went around and spoke to students at high schools and attended college fairs at both high schools and community college. When schools came to visit the university I assisted with giving them a tour of the campus as well as an admissiona and records presentation. I am very familar with the CSU system as a whole.
My teaching style is to find how the students connect to the material and tie that into the material so that the student finds ways to remember the information in their own way. I also like to find fun ways to present the information so that it is not all lecturing but interaction between me and the student. I feel and believe that if you can teach the material to someone else than you ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In 1983 I completed an ESL teacher training course at Stanford University, and subsequently was hired to teach English in Japan. I made heavy use of the prevailing ideas in ESL teaching at that time. More recently, in designing teaching materials for middle and high school students, I have attempted to map my lessons to the cognitive skills identified in Bloom's taxonomy.
Over the past decade I have also prepared science curriculum materials (middle and high school) for Glencoe McGraw-Hill, Gale Thomson, Pearson and John Wiley. I am the author of The Globalization of Trade, an introduction to the economics of globalization for young readers (published in 2004). Most of my curriculum writing has been science-related, but I have also prepared articles in other areas for Gale Thomson's reference books. My academic training was in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry). I ear ... read more
