Through my teaching experiences, I have found the method of facilitating rather than dictating, to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. My teaching experiences have taught me that if students construct their own learning experiences, they will not only retain the information longer but they will also become more confident in their abilities. In special education I also realize how important it is for a teacher to adapt their teaching to the learning styles in the environment that they are placed. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.

I received a BS degree in chemistry and a minor in applied biology. My original thought was to attend medical school (I even took the MCAT), but decided to persue a PhD in inorganic chemistry instead. I have extensive experience in working with students. I worked as an organic chemistry lab assistant as an undergraduate. During graudate school, I taught both general and analytical chemistry. I am currently teaching chemistry classes at Terra State Community College.
I believe that anyone can understand the subject matter if it is presnted to them in a way that fits their unique learning style.
