Creative Learning

I have always tutored informally, whether fellow classmates or nieces and nephews. My formal teaching career began as a Teaching assistant at Johns Hopkins University for a field ecology class. I continued as a guest lecturer at various universities and seminars relating to field ecology and oil spill clean-up. When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience includes two years of full time teaching at the PreK level. I also have experience working with grade level students through practicums, student teaching, and substitute teaching. I have assisted teachers with middle school students during a summer technical program as well. I currently hold a M.S. in Education specializing at the Elementary grade levels. Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it. What went right? WHat went wrong? What did they learn. Egg Cartons and White boards are my favorite manipulatives. Often mistakes are the best teachers.
My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids.

Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. While some find it easy to learn in the classroom setting, many need individual attention which is where tutors come in. Teachers simply cannot give each student the individual attention that they might need. Also, teachers need to be hands on in their delivery.
