People are always surprised when they find out I'm a math nerd. I'm outgoing, I like to joke and I play sports. But believe it or not, I actually do enjoy math and this is one of the biggest reasons for my success as a tutor/teacher. I don't fake my enthusiasm and this helps engage students. My style is to teach a concept during the one on one session with me. I then give them homework to reinforce the learning on personal time. In the following meeting I revise what we learnt in previous session to ensure they understood before proceeding to next topic. I work with students with different learning styles (pictures, words and numbers) and will adapt to their needs. I am patient and will explain numerous times, in different ways, to ensure learning.
During my undergraduate years, I was tutoring a local grade 4 student in math. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience in making a difference in somebody's life. During the last 15 years in my career, I have always been involved in training/teaching/mentoring individuals whether it is a new computer system or helping my direct staff to grow to their full potential.
