At your pace, on your level

I have always been passionate about communications and teaching. I began tutoring mathematics in High School and during my undergraduate schooling I mentored and tutored introductory university level physics, calculus, chemistry, and organic chemistry. I am currently in graduate school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine studying Molecular Biology and Genomics but remain informally interested in mathematics and physics.
I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. However, in my experience and research, I have noticed that active learning and discovery-based learning are arguably most effective mechanisms for knowledge retention. Therefore, I make considerable efforts to implement these styles into my teaching.

My teaching style emphasizes the differences between children, especially with regards to learning styles. Different children comprehend and understand in unique ways - while one may understand best from tactile or visual demonstrations, others learn best simply by hearing. Even within the same student, certain concepts are best understood in atypical ways. I firmly believe that as an educator, my job is to be flexible and creative in devising appropriate teaching methods for each child - what works for one will not always work for another. The most effective teaching comes from understanding this, and tailoring specific approaches to each individual student's needs.
I currently have two degrees: a B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in Global Studies. In pursuing these degrees I have gained knowledge in various fields including biology, math, chemistry, global politics a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time. The Sanctuary hosts interns from all over the world including 26 interns (age range: 17-42) from 24 countries in my time as coordinator. I also teach two 1-credit courses per year as an instructor with Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA.

During my time in college, I was a teacher assistant for 6 different semesters. As an undergraduate at Longwood, I was a general biology teacher assistant for a laboratory section. Later, I became a teacher assistant for an anatomy lab. I aided students during lab sections. In addition to this, I held a weekly tutoring session. At the University of Notre Dame, I was the teacher assistant for a physiology lab. After giving a brief lecture, I helped students with their experiments. After such experiments, I graded lab reports and weekly assignments giving the necessary feedback.
During my teaching experiences, I have realized that all students learn differently and at varying speeds. To assume that every student is the same is wrong. I have almost 10 years of experience of teaching students for the SAT,GRE, and specific subjects, combined. It started during my freshman year (1999) at Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL). I tutored students through college in Biology, Chemistry and the SAT. Out of this experience, I instructed students for multiple semesters in a Biology Lab course. After I graduated from Wheaton (2003), I entered a doctoral (Ph.D.) program at Johns Hopkins Medical School to study Molecular Biology. During my time in Baltimore, I have tutored a wide range of students for the SAT with a company called StudySmart, and have also tutored students privately for the GRE at Loyola, Johns Hopkins and Goucher College.
