I traveled for a year with a family and home-schooled their 3 children. The children were in 1st grade, kindergarten, and pre-school and were seriously below grade level in math and reading. In that year, I brought those children beyond grade level in reading skills and comprehension as well as math skills. I have also been a teacher's assistant in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms and have gone through student teaching in the 3rd and 6th grade in order to complete my degree. I have had most of my experience with the elementary age-group but I also feel confident working through some middle school and high school material.

I have 5.5 years at Michigan Technological University in the studies of Mechanical Engineering. I recalled my difficulties in learning difficult subjects, my difficulties are not universal but I draw from them in finding what is blocking the student from grasping certain concepts. I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked. Till this day they know fractions inside and out because they understood the concept in real life. This is typically my approach, then we can go and do problems in the abstract on paper.

I have seen through substituting that there are many children who need extra attention to help them understand a certain subject. Tutoring will allow me to give them the one-on-one they need to learn something that is hard in a classroom setting. I like to connect with the children immediately and try to use examples of real-life situations to guide their learning.
